JAKE PRINCE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Critiquing Photography
Descriptive: This is a photograph of my license plate for my old car. It is descriptive because it identifies and defines what my license plate is and what a New Jersey License plate looks like.
Explanatory: My photograph I took at a New York Knicks game is explanatory because it shows Madison Square Garden and basketball players playing on the court.
Interpretative: This Lewis W. Hine photograph is interpretative because it shows 2 workers sitting on top of an industrial site during the industrial revolution, which can be interpreted differently by many.
Aesthetically Evaluative: My photograph is aesthetically evaluative because it shows the beauty of the sunshine beaming through the clouds onto the marsh from the view on top of a cliff.
Ethically Evaluative: Charles Moore's photograph of an African American man getting attacked by a police dog is ethically evaluative because it brings into question the ethics of the time period of segregation in the United States and how people were treated unfairly during these times.
Theoretical: Eleanor Antin's photograph of 100 boots is theoretical because it is an abstract piece that makes the viewer wonder what is going on in the photograph and what is the deeper meaning.
Multimodal Presentation
Synopsis of Multimodal Presentation:
For my presentation, I have chosen the photojournalist Don McCullin. McCullin was born in the UK in 1935 and the bulk of his work surrounds war photography and the underside of society. In my presentation, I highlight photographs taken by McCullin during World War 2, The Vietnam War, and a landscape photograph as well. His photography gives a glimpse into the traumatizing and obscure scenes of war to give a picture into the hardships society can cause for people. His photographs are touching and can be remembered solely off the emotional impact they have on the viewer. They are powerful and allow for the average person to visualize the negative aspect of human society.
New Perception of Photography:
The work of Don McCullin has given me a new look on photography as I have now visualized what some humans go through during war and trouble which I have no personal experience with myself. It makes me feel grateful to live in a country with freedom or the worry of being attacked at any time. The black and white color scheme in which he takes his photographs adds to the eeriness and horror of the photos. I respect these images because they make you understand the world is not all sunshine and rainbows, but to be grateful when you see them. This is exemplified in the last photograph in my presentation of the beautiful landscape which shows the beauty of nature that will always be there no matter what is going on with humans.
